What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is perhaps one of the world’s most understood forms of healing. When I say hypnotherapy you are probably thinking of a man onstage swinging a pocket watch back and forth in front of someone’s eyes as they are commanded to perform actions they ordinarily wouldn’t.
This is entertainment- real hypnotherapy is a distant cousin.
Hypnotherapy involves the entering a different state of consciousness, known as a hypnotic trance. This trance causes actual physical changes in the brain as documented by fMRI. These brain scans show less activity in areas of the brain governing relaxation, worry and self awareness, allowing the patient to be less self conscious and more open to suggestion.
Hypnotherapy for Anxiety
Hypnotherapy has been used successfully to ameliorate anxiety or act as an adjunct therapy to other forms of healing. It naturally treats anxiety since relaxation is a big part of the process, and is induced through different techniques utilized by a skilled practitioner.
Hypnotherapy can help people re-frame their anxiety while in the altered state brought on by hypnosis. Hypnotherapy works with the principle of neuroplasticity- the concept that the brain has the ability to change it’s function and even structure in response to experience. This rewiring occurs more efficiently during hypnotherapy, as the mind is in a relaxed and open state.
Hypnotherapy is useful as a stand-alone therapy to treat anxiety, or as an adjunct to more traditional treatments like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) or medication.
What Happens During a Hypnotherapy Session?
In a real hypnotherapy session the therapist will ask you detailed questions about your condition or concern. You will then be guided through imagery and possibly music to reach a point of deep relaxation, allowing you to concentrate on gentle verbal suggestions the therapist uses to lay the groundwork for positive changes in your life.
Hypnotherapy for Other Conditions
In scientific studies, hypnotherapy has been proven to be helpful with smoking cessation, weight loss, pain, headaches and migraines, and addiction recovery. It may also be helpful for a wide variety of conditions such as emotional and mental health issues, relationship issues, concentration problems, sleep disorders and many more.
